MESSAGE FOR AMANDA

Dear Amanda,

Ten years ago you were crossing troubled waters and living very difficult moments.
At that time I had the chance to stand by you and say "Be patient, time and love will make the miracle ...".

After having seen the photos that Joan circulated, I can say with a big smile that I was right (for once !!!).

Looking at your and Joan's sparkling eyes when you are with your kids, I'm sincerely happy for you all.

On the occasion of your 40th birthday, the only thing I want to wish you from the deep of my heart is to spend 40 more years surrounded by this wonderful family that you so strongly wanted and loved already before it became a reality.

All the best, my dear.

Giovanna

" Amanda, muchas felicidades en este cumpleaños tan especial! . 40 años, un gran tópico. Aún quedan muchas cosas por hacer y mucho por vivir:

Volver a estudiar, ahora restauración.

HENNY MOGENSEN

Dear Amanda,

It seems not so long ago that we worked together in the Bureau Team. But it must have been. You have got three kids in the meantime, so yes - it is a few years ago!

But you still look great - forever young and attractive - so nobody would ever believe that you will be 40 years old this month! Believe me - 40 is nothing - no need to panic!!

I wish you a very happy birthday - with family, friends, cakes, drinks and PARTY!

Let's keep in touch.

A big hug from

Henny

GOOD OLD DAYS....

JUNE 1998... Tenerife

Amanda,

Cast your mind back... June 1998..... Tenerife!!!! How could we ever forget the holiday from hell! The "calima"... rain... black sand... missing luggage... that disgusting swimming pool... the animal park... we couldn't even manage to buy a pair of shoes correctly!

Memories best forgotten!

Amanda, Amanda, Amanda....... "THE" photo....... taken on the FIRST evening........ the FIRST dance........ the FIRST get together!!! Aren't you glad there was an empty seat at our table and that Joan happened to sit there!

ps. Do you think Jesper will ever forgive us for the giggling during the presentation beforehand?!

Claime to fame...

Amanda,

Remember this? Our total claim to fame! We were more than capable of keeping up with the Jones' at the Labour Party Conference in Brighton (October 1997)! Did we really look like this?!

Dear Amanda,

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!
I bet you never thought you'd be celebrating your 40th with a Spanish hubbie and 3 lovely kids in tow, relaxing by a swimming pool in a beautiful house in Spain with the sun shining! Just perfect! We're not complaining.... in exchange we got the beautiful house in Brussels but unfortunately no swimming pool and no sun shining! Have a great birthday and hopefully see you soon.

With lots of love,

Siobhan and Peter xxx

VIVIENNE...

Hi Amanda,

'wish I could be with you to celebrate your 40th birthday. Here's a photo of us 10 years ago on St Patrick's day! Doesn't time fly?
I can't believe all that has changed in those 10 years. Anyway I think you're looking marvellous!
I will hopefully make it over there one of these days and check out your house and catch up.

That's all from me. Have a wonderful birthday!

love, vivienne

JANE...

Dearest Fatty Pig,

I can't believe you are turning 40! Where do all the years go I wonder! There are so many amazing memories that you and I have made together. I don't believe there's a more pure love than the love two sisters share. Don't get me wrong, I know you could have slapped me on numerous occasions and probably did as I recall! It doesn't change a thing though, we'll always be as 'tight as ticks' another 40 years from now. I recall giving you the last scrapings of the peanut butter jar in the middle of Nyanga on a birthday not far off 20 years ago now! That's love if ever I saw it, especially for me. It's not often I give over my culinary needs for anything let alone on a starvation diet in the deepest wilds of Africa. Remember the stew those folk in the camper van offered us, how desparate we were!! Oh happy day, rolling in the dirt trying to find the flattest, rock free piece of ground to pitch our 2 inch square tent. I still have echoes of you complaining of your bum bruise you got with buster guts polo pony! It was your nightly chant for many a long moon. Those were the days huh, footloose and fancy free. I owe you a huge debt of gratitude, you took a risk going with me and you gave me a relationship that we may never have had and a chance to see you for who you are. I look back in awe, you helped me slow down and realise the fun is in the journey and not the destination. How much I would have missed without you and what a poorer person I would be. I love you so much it's nigh on impossible to even dent the surface. Maybe that's what the next forty years are for. I've watched you grow and share your love with a beautiful husband and bring the most loved children into this world. My heart is full of awe for the love you have with your family. You are a tight bond and can weather every storm. We've gone through losses that have brought us closer and given me strength to go forward when I couldn't have alone. You alone got my attention to look at my life and turn it around. I would still be drinking if not for your love and persistence with me. I remember a week in Brussels where you spent the entire time talking me into getting help. That changed my life and I don't know that Icould have heard it from anyone else. We may look different ( though of course we're both blond!!) and god knows we come at things from different directions but how cool is that - to have a sister is beyond words but to have a confident and best friend just takes the biscuit. I love you from the tips of my beautiful toes to my golden locks and I wish this day and everyday forward fills you up from the inside out and brings you joy and happiness no matter the changing scenery.
Pooh Patty, it's you and me against the world - eat cake and go to town.

Your adoring and adorable POExxxxxxx

SUE...

Dear Amanda

Many happy returns on your 40th birthday! Hope you have a great party. Sorry we cannot be with you on your special day.

Hope to see you again before too long – when are you coming to Brussels next? Perhaps we could meet up in Barcelona for a “girlie” weekend sometime - you, me and Monica… That would be great.

Take care.

Lots of Love Sue (Chris, Julian and Jessica)

PS. I’ve attached a photo of “Charlie’s Angels” taken in Chateau de la Hulpe when we were all still on maternity leave!!

EMMA...

Hi Mands,

Happy, happy birthday! I'm so sorry we aren't able to celebrate with you, we'll raise a glass in London! Baby Rickett is due in under 1 month, I finish work at the end of this week so am looking forward to being able to focus on new arrivals. The nursery is looking gorgeous thanks to you, can't wait for you to see it.

Have a wonderful birthday, all our love to you all at your end,Ç

Ems xxx

ADRIAN...

Darling Mands,

Firstly, I would like to say how sorry we are not to be with you on such a special day. I am sure that you can imagine the size that Ems has become over the last few weeks and we only have another 3 weeks or so until the due date.

I thought that I would take this opportunity to wish you a very Happy Birthday! I can't believe that you are still 21! It doesn't seem that long ago that I was rammed into a car with you, Ma and Pa heading down to Exeter with all your kit at the start of term. You seemed so grown up back then. Strange to think that you were only a teenager! Things have changed so much since then and you have achieved so much. From the dizzy heights of wearing orange boiler suits on board a Dover to Calais ferry to the dark halls of the European parliament you have always worked hard and it is wonderful to see that you have such an amazing family in Spain. You really deserve it.

I hope that you have a truly brilliant day and Ems and I will come to see you in a few months when the baby is a little bigger. In the meantime, my love to you all and do keep in touch.

Happy Birthday!!!

All my love,

AD

SARAH PRODDOW

Dear Mands,

Wishing you a really happy 40th birthday! I hope you have a very special time and celebrate hard - these landmark birthdays don't come up very often. I am sorry not to be there with you but I will be thinking of you (and raising a glass...)

Lots of love,
Sazxx

MARITA AND URBAN

Dear Amanda,

Before I was as old as I am now - 51 - I thought it was only disastrous to become older. I have changed my mind totally. I have never been as happy as I am now. Of course, the most important thing is my family; my daughters and my soul-mate. My daughters are now 28 and 26 and the oldest one is planning of having a family, so if we are lucky I will soon become a grandmother.

It is the receipt for happiness. So I just want to give these words to carry along with you, if ever you are afraid that time goes by: enjoy each moment of it and it will only get better!! You have the basis for this dearest Amanda in your lovely little ones and your beloved Joan.

If ever you are in Brussels, please be in contact as I would very much like to meet you. Or if you are in Italy when we are there, call us and we'll have dinner together.

I hope that this important birthday of yours will be fantastic and that many of your dear friends will be with you!! We will sing a song for you and think extra about you.

An enormously big hug to you from
Marita and Urban

ENDA....

Amanda,
Happy Birthday!
As you know I was always working on Joan's behalf - even when other people were relaxing! This is the evidence!
Enda

Dear Joan

It was so lovely to hear from you and to hear of your very thoughtful project to have a celebration for Mandy.

It made me remember when I met Mandy first (in 1993!) and we (spontaneously) moved in to a flat together on avenue de Nerviens beside the Cinquantenaire in Brussels, I only knew her a few weeks when it was her birthday and decided to organise a surprise party for her - we had no mobile phones, no landline, no doorbell but somehow half of the stage turned up. She was then and still is a popular girl and friend.

I am so sorry to say that I have a family wedding in Ireland this weekend and will be taking my Mum it on the west coast of Ireland. I have just moved house in London also over the last weeks so all a bit hectic at the moment but all good.

Please give my very warmest wishes to Mandy, lots of hugs and kisses on her birthday and tell her I hope we get to meet up again very soon and I will be thinking of her.

Will you be travelling to the UK anytime soon?

Lots of love to you, Mandy and the children.
Trish

1968 A year of revolt...

It was a year of seismic social and political change across the globe. From the burgeoning anti-Vietnam war and civil rights movements in the United States, protests and revolutions in Europe and the first comprehensive coverage of war and resultant famine in Africa. The world would never be the same again.

And in 1968 there were some protests...and Amanda came...

The protests that dominated the 1968 were the product of social changes during the twenty years following the end of World War II. After the war most of the world experienced an unusual surge in births, creating a large age demographic. In the First World, these babies were born during a time of peace and prosperity for most countries. Permissive theories of childrearing, popular in the west, taught them that their happiness was important to others.[1] This was the first generation to grow up with television in their homes.[2] Television had a profound effect on this generation in two ways. First, it gave them a common perspective from which to view the world.[3] The children growing up in this era shared not only the news and programs that they watched on television, they also got glimpses of each other’s world. Secondly, television allowed them to experience major public events. Public education was becoming more widely attended and more standardized, creating another shared experience. Chain stores and franchised restaurants were bringing shared shopping and dining experiences to people in different parts of the world.[4] These factors all combined to create a generation that was more self-aware and more united as a group than the generations before it.

Waves of social movements throughout the 1960’s began to shape the values of the generation that were college students during 1968. In America, the Civil Rights Movement was at its most violent. Italy and France were in the midst of a socialist movement. The New Left political movement was causing political upheavals in many European and South American countries. The Israeli conflict had already started. Great Britain’s anti-war movement was very strong and African independence was a continuing struggle. The Cuban Missile Crisis and the cold war was another shared experience of this generation. The knowledge that a nuclear attack could end their life at any moment was reinforced with classroom bomb drills[5] creating an atmosphere of fear. As they became older teens the anti-war movement and the feminist movement were becoming a force in much of the world. The feminist movement made the generation question their belief that the family was more important than the individual. The peace movement made them question and distrust authority even more that then they had already.[6] By the time they started college many were part of the anti-establishment culture and became the impetus for a wave of rebellion that started on college campuses and swept the world.

The college students of 1968 embraced the New Left politics. Their socialist leanings and distrust of authority led to many of the 1968 conflicts. The dramatic events of the year showed both the popularity and limitations of New Left ideology, a radical leftist movement that was also deeply ambivalent about its relationship to communism during the middle and later years of the Cold War.
